January 11, 2016

CHICAGO—Rathna Koka, Ph.D., a patent attorney with extensive food and life sciences patent experience including 16 years at Kraft Foods, has joined intellectual property law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione in Chicago, bolstering the firm’s patent prosecution practice.

As a research scientist at multinational food and beverage company Kraft Foods, Dr. Koka developed proprietary compositions and processes used to fortify and manufacture dairy and other food products. She also managed IP strategy, including preparing patent claims; valuing, streamlining, and managing patent portfolios; and evaluating third-party patent portfolios for investment opportunities.

Amir N. Penn, co-chair of Brinks’ patent prosecution practice, notes that Dr. Koka's real-world industry experience will be a tremendous asset to Brinks' clients. "A background combining work as a scientist, inventor, and attorney is rare, but Dr. Koka delivers on all three fronts," he says. "We look forward to including Dr. Koka on teams serving our clients, certainly those focused on patented food products and life sciences products designed to be ingested orally."

Dr. Koka holds numerous patents related to food science in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Her research has been extensively published in scientific journals, and she has presented frequently at international food microbiology symposia. Dr. Koka earned her J.D. cum laude from The John Marshall Law School, where she also completed a J.D. Certificate in Intellectual Property Law. She also holds a Ph.D. from Utah State University and an M.S. from Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology in India.
