Jonathan Hartley PH.D.
Patent Agent

“I love learning about cutting-edge technology and drafting patent applications that can be successfully prosecuted in any country in the world.”

Dr. Jonathan Hartley brings nearly a decade of laboratory research experience solving difficult technical problems to the firm, enabling him to assist clients with complex intellectual property issues.

He regularly drafts patent applications, conducts freedom-to-operate studies, and prosecutes patent applications in many countries.  He represents a broad range of clients, including medical device and pharmaceutical companies, global energy and chemical companies, universities, and start-ups.

With both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemical engineering and a doctorate in bioengineering, Jonathan has an unusual breadth of knowledge that enables him to quickly grasp inventions and appreciate their commercial potential. His experience as a teaching assistant for an undergraduate biotransport course and a graduate level polymer science course taught him how to effectively communicate complicated topics so they are easily understandable.

Jonathan’s doctoral research was supported by numerous fellowships and awards including a National Research Service Award from the National Cancer Institute and a Whitaker International Summer Grant. Jonathan has experience developing acoustically sensitive liposomes, using bioconjugation techniques to attach peptides and oligonucleotides to poly(N-(2-hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide) (HPMA), and producing, purifying, and characterizing monoclonal antibodies for therapeutic applications. Dr. Hartley is an author and coauthor in 8 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts.
