The Impact of COVID-19 on Innovation

On October 29, 2020, Crain’s Chicago Business hosted its third annual Most Innovative Companies event virtually this year due to COVID-19. Sponsored by Brinks Gilson & Lione, the event brought together a number of leaders from Chicago based companies, including a few from the 46 companies named to the list featured in Crain’s to discuss the state of innovation during these uncertain times. Brinks president Gus Siller congratulated the innovators and addressed the group, mentioning the many challenges they must all be facing and that "[t]he ability to adapt to change is the key to success."

Crain’s Publisher and Executive Editor, Jim Kirk and Senior Reporter, John Pletz moderated the session. Some key takeaway from the discussion are:

  • Having their entire companies move to working remotely full-time has been a more positive experience than was expected
  • Companies are reevaluating their patent portfolios strategy to align with a “quality over quantity” mentality
  • Uncertainty is the root of caution, but innovative companies realize they must continue embracing risk in pursuit of reward
