Intellectual Property Today Again Ranks IP Specialist Brinks Gilson & Lione in Top 20 US Law Firms for Prosecuting Patents, Firm Continues to Grow Faster Than Peers
CHICAGO—Brinks Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the United States, has again been ranked in the top 20 patent firms in the country for 2013 by Intellectual Property Today. This marks the eleventh consecutive year in which Brinks has been ranked by the magazine in the top 20 firms in its annual ranking of more than 280 U.S. boutique and general practice firms with IP practices.
Brinks ranked 16th in 2013 in the number of utility patents issued, with 1,804, and for the third year in a row, ranked fifth in the number of design patents obtained, with 133.
Combined, Brinks attorneys saw a total of 1,937 U.S. patents issued in 2013, for year-over-year growth of 12 percent in the number of patents obtained—placing the firm in a tie for fifth highest growth rate amongst the top twenty firms.
Brinks was also one of only six firms in the top twenty to see the volume of its patent awards increase by more than ten percent. The number of patents obtained by Brinks for its clients has increased 28 percent since 2011 and by more than a third since 2010.
According to the IP Today survey, Brinks also ranks sixth in the country in the number of intellectual property attorneys. The firm's patent prosecution group includes 128 patent attorneys—an increase of almost 9 percent over the prior year and a reflection of the rising demand for the firm's core intellectual property legal services. The practice also includes nine patent agents. Brinks' patent prosecution group serves commercial clients and research universities in every major technical field, including innovators in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, energy, agriculture, electrical and computer technologies, the mechanical arts, medical devices, green technology, and nanotechnology.
Intellectual Property Today determines rankings according to the total number of issued U.S. utility patents that firms obtained on behalf of their clients, and includes separate breakdowns by plant and design patents.
