Intellectual Property Today Again Accords Brinks Top 20 Ranking in Patents, Firm's Growth Out-Ranks Peers
March 21, 2013

CHICAGO – Brinks Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S., has again been ranked in the top 20 patent firms in the country for 2012 by Intellectual Property Today.

Brinks in 2012 ranked 14th in the number of utility patents issued, with 1,634, moving up two spots in the magazine's national ranking of more than 270 boutique and general practice firms with IP practices, and marking the tenth consecutive year in which Brinks has been ranked in the top 20. For the second year in a row, Brinks also ranked 5th in the number of design patents obtained, with 130.

Combined, Brinks attorneys saw a total of 1,764 U.S. patents issued in 2012, for year-over-year growth in the number of patents obtained of 15.6%—a percentage higher than all but one of the top 10 firms ranked.

Brinks was also one of only five firms in the top twenty to see the volume of its patent awards increase by more than fifteen percent. The number of patents obtained by Brinks for its clients has increased 22 percent since 2010 and more than 43 percent since 2009.

According to the IP Today survey, Brinks also ranks 6th in the country in the number of intellectual property attorneys. The firm's patent prosecution group includes 118 patent attorneys and four patent agents, and serves clients in every major technical field, including biotechnology, computer science, electronics, chemistry and chemical engineering, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, nanotechnology and mechanical engineering.

Intellectual Property Today, one of the leading international IP law publications, determines rankings according to the total number of issued U.S. utility patents that firms obtained on behalf of their clients, and includes separate breakdowns by plant and design patents.
