Former Technology Firm Patent Counsel Fei Hu Joins Brinks Gilson & Lione's Forthcoming Shenzhen Office
October 24, 2016

CHICAGO—Patent attorney Fei Hu, most recently senior legal counsel for processing chipmaker ARM Ltd., is joining intellectual property law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione in Washington DC.

A Chinese native, Hu brings to Brinks his years of experience as senior legal counsel to ARM Ltd., a leader in the field of processors for mobile phones and tablet computers; as senior legal counsel to Huawei Technologies, a multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company headquartered in Shenzhen, China; and as corporate legal counsel to Tencent, Inc., China's largest and most used Internet service portal.

Brinks Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the US, announced in May that it had filed an application to become the first foreign law firm with an office in Shenzhen, a major financial and manufacturing center dubbed “China’s Silicon Valley.”

While now based in Washington DC, Hu will soon return to his native China, where he will be the first local attorney hire in that Shenzhen office, the firm’s first overseas.

“Fei’s knowledge of the Chinese language and its culture, as well as his extensive technical and legal experience as a litigator and in negotiating technology agreements and licenses, will be an asset to our Chinese clients as they enter and expand in the U.S. and the global marketplace,” said Brinks shareholder and litigator Harold V. Johnson, managing shareholder of the Shenzhen office.

“I’m extremely pleased to welcome Fei as the first of what I believe will be many local hires in China as we expand.”

Hu earned his J.D. at the University of Toledo College of Law and holds a B.S. in applied physics from Tongji University College of Sciences in Shanghai. His is admitted to the District of Columbia Bar and to the state bars of New York and New Jersey, and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The Shenzhen region is known for high technology and biological research, including for pharmaceutical and bioengineering companies, and for its favorable business environment for hardware start-ups.

Hu joins the nine other attorneys and a scientific advisor who have joined Brinks since September 1, 2016.
