Brinks Patent Attorney Marc Richards Receives 2014 Burton Award for Distinguished Legal Writing
CHICAGO—Marc V. Richards, a patent attorney and shareholder at the Chicago office of intellectual property law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione, has been named a 2014 Distinguished Legal Writing Award winner by the Burton Awards for his article, 'Three Years After Bilski—The Patentability of Business Methods,' published by the Practising Law Institute on August 8, 2013.
The Burton Awards for Distinguished Legal Writing are accorded to only 30 authors nationwide from entries submitted by the managing partners of the 1,000 largest law firms in the U.S. The Academic Board of the Burton Awards, a panel of judges and professors from top law schools, selected the winners based on articles that demonstrate clear, concise, and comprehensive legal writing and were published within the last year.
Richards will be recognized for his achievement at the 15th Anniversary Burton Awards Program and Gala at the U.S. Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. on June 9, 2014.
In his winning article, Richards reviews recent developments in the law governing the patentability of business methods and discusses the ambiguity created by the ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States in Bilski v. Kappos in 2010, and in subsequent decisions at the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC), including those in CLS Bank, CyberSource, Ultramercial and Dealertrack.
Marc Richards has more than 20 years of experience at Brinks, where he specializes in complex U.S. and international patent cases in diverse technologies, including appeals before the CAFC. He is co-chair of Brinks' post-grant patent practice, which oversees the firm's proceedings before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, including post-grant and inter partes reviews, covered business method reviews, interferences, and reexaminations. A widely respected authority on patent-related issues, Richards has also published and presented frequently on the subject. In 2013, he was named to Illinois Super Lawyers.
Richards is a member of the American and Chicago Bar Associations, the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI). He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, M.B.A. with honors from the University of Chicago, and J.D. cum laude from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
Brinks has a long history of distinguished writing in the field of intellectual property law. Previous Burton Awards winners include Brinks shareholders and intellectual property attorneys Jerome Gilson, Jeffery Handelman, and Mary Squyres. Brinks also received the “Decade Award” in 2010 for the greatest number of Burton Awards since the award’s inception in 1999, a direct reflection of the high quality of legal writing at the firm.
The Burton Awards, held in association with the Library of Congress, was established as a non-profit, academic effort devoted to recognizing and rewarding excellence in the legal profession, with a principal focus on awarding effective legal writing. The unique national awards program honors partners in law firms and law school students who use plain, clear and concise language in their writing. More information is at www.burtonawards.com.
