Brinks Gilson & Lione Advances Again in National Law Journal Rankings of Largest U.S. Law Firms
CHICAGO—Intellectual property law firm Brinks Gilson & Lione, one of the nation's largest IP firms, moved up to from 266 to 260 in this year's NLJ 350, a ranking of the nation's largest law firms released this month by The National Law Journal (NLJ).
According to data compiled by NLJ, Brinks had 150 attorneys in 2013, a growth rate of 2.7% over 2012—more than three times the national average. Excluding headcount gains achieved through foreign mergers, NLJ reported an average year-over-year uptick in the number of attorneys at all NLJ 350 firms of just 0.8%.
Notably, Brinks in 2013 hired eleven new associates, its largest associate class since 2008, resulting in an increase of 11.1% in its associate headcount over 2012. The total number of associates at NLJ 350 firms rose by only 3.6% last year, and growth was flat when the biggest mergers were taken out of the equation.
Brinks has grown its team of attorneys by more than 10% in the last two years, according to NLJ's ranking criteria.
Brinks serves commercial clients and research universities in every major technical field, including innovators in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, energy, agriculture, electrical and computer technologies, the mechanical arts, medical devices, green technology, and nanotechnology. In addition to its largest office in Chicago, Brinks has offices in Washington, D.C.; Research Triangle Park, N.C.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Detroit; Salt Lake City and Indianapolis.
The National Law Journal is a leading publication that provides in-depth legal news and analysis to private practitioners, judges, corporate lawyers, government attorneys and other members of the legal community. The annual NLJ 350 survey is based on the average number of full-time equivalent attorneys for the period between January 1 and December 31, 2013.
