Attorney Joshua Smith, Electrical Design and Systems Engineer, Joins Brinks Gilson & Lione as Associate in Chicago
CHICAGO — From designing flight test data and prototype aircraft systems for the F-15 Eagles and F-18 Hornets that defend our nation to prosecuting and defending the high-technology and electrical engineering patents of his clients, Joshua P. Smith has made a perfect three-point landing at Brinks Gilson & Lione, one of the nation’s largest intellectual property law firms.
Smith transitioned to practicing law after six years as a professional electrical design engineer, first at the Boeing Company in St. Louis, Mo., where he worked on flight systems testing for the F-15 and F-18 warplanes, then as a systems engineer at The Chamberlain Group, in Elmhurst, Ill., focused on baseband and radio frequency hardware, and accompanying firmware and software.
“The most effective electrical prosecution attorneys have real-world industry experience to present alongside their engineering and legal education,” notes John Nethery, who chairs Brinks’ patent prosecution practice. “This rare combination of talents, when it can be found, allows the attorney to both speak the language of engineer inventors, and apply critical legal expertise to create valuable patent rights.”
Adds Nethery, “Josh Smith has this rare combination, and we look forward to teaming him up with our complex electrical clients to help them achieve their IP goals.”
“Brinks’ reputation for providing the highest quality IP legal counseling combined with its outstanding clients made my decision to join the firm easy,” said Smith. “I am excited to be part of such a strong practice group at a firm that regards its clients as highly as those clients regard the firm.”
Smith earned his B.S. in electrical engineering at the University of Illinois. While earning his J.D. at the DePaul University College of Law, he worked as a technical advisor in the legal field and continued to practice as an attorney after graduation. He is registered to practice before the USPTO and is a member of the State Bar of Illinois. He is based in Chicago.
